WINTER IS A WONDERFUL TIME to get out and enjoy nature. Southern Dalarna’s undulating terrain is perfect for cross-country skiing. The lakes and rivers could have been made for long-distance skating, and there are toboggan and ski hills.
Southern Dalarna offers plenty of opportunities for WINTER MOTORSPORTS. Waymarked SNOWMOBILE TRAILS exist in most districts of Southern Dalarna. You can rent a self-drive snowmobile from specialist companies in Ludvika, Grängesberg and Säfsen, and at Dalarnas Äventyrscentrum near Säter.
If you don’t fancy driving yourself, there are guided SNOWMOBILE TOURS operating from various locations in Southern Dalarna and ranging in duration from a couple of hours to a whole day. You can buy maps showing all the snowmobile trails from tourist information centres and local snowmobile clubs.
SNOWBIKING and ICE GO-KARTING are two more winter activities on wheels. Both take place on ice, and for snowbiking there is also a forest course.
SOUTHERN DALARNA has a high profile and long history in motor and cycle sports. In SÄFSEN west of Ludvika and in SÄTER there are numerous MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS suitable for leisure and elite cyclists alike. Säfsen has around 300 km of trails for various abilities, and Säter has around 250 km of trails taking in most of the district’s sights. The trails are well signposted and have excellent information boards en route.
A 110-km cycle track runs alongside STRÖMSHOLMS KANAL, Sweden’s second oldest and second longest canal. Bike rentals, package deals and maps are available.
PRÅMLEDEN is a cycle, canoe, hiking and boat trail running from Långshyttan via Stjärnsund to Hofors. Pråmleden runs through sections of Husbyringen, Sweden’s first industrial heritage trail. All the trails are signposted, with well-kept picnic areas and information boards en route.
In Southern Dalarna you can also challenge your family to a GO-KART RACE, both outdoors in Grängesberg and indoors at Dalarna’s only indoor track in Vikmanshyttan, just outside Hedemora.
You can also try BANGER RACING, CROSSKART RACING and 4-WHEELING in Grängesberg or Ulfshyttan. Children’s 4-wheeling is also on offer throughout the year – driving skill, not age, is what matters here.

We offer a very wide range of horse-related activities. Our RIDING SCHOOLS are open all year round, offering everything from riding lessons and weekend/summer camps to riding tours lasting several hours or all day.
Why not RENT A BED AND A PADDOCK? A number of farms in Southern Dalarna offer this facility, and the proprietors or the local tourist information centre will be pleased to suggest riding itineraries in the area. You can also drive a PONY AND TRAP courtesy of several local entrepreneurs.
